8th Grade Calculator Information

Dear MJHS Parents,
The requirement for students to own their own graphing calculator has existed at Morton High School for a number of years, and we feel it is also beneficial for 8th graders to own this calculator in order to increase the learning opportunities. The calculator that students need to purchase to be compliant with high school expectations is the TI-Nspire CX II. It is critical that students obtain a TI-Nspire CX because MJHS and MHS math teachers have software for these specific devices. TI-Nspire CX graphing calculators are available through Amazon, Best Buy, or most office supply stores.

If you will be purchasing a new TI-Nspire CX or TI-Nspire CX II (the latest version of the Nspire, which has a color screen) between now and the start of the school year, would you please return the entire “compare models” card that comes with the calculator to your child’s math teacher? It will help us to obtain the Navigator system at no cost to the district. The Navigator system allows for interactive activities and functions during instruction in the classroom. There is a picture of this card included on the next page. You would need to return the entire card, not just the “TI Points” portion.

If your child will be using a hand-me-down TI-Nspire from an older sibling, such as the greyscale model, we will no longer be able to install the latest operating system nor will we be able to use this calculator with the Navigator system. It does, however, have most all of the functionality of the CX and can still be used with much success.

The TI-Nspire CAS and TI-Nspire CX-CAS calculators are allowed on the SAT, but these calculators are not allowed on the ACT and thus not allowed for students enrolled in MHS courses other than AP Calculus, so we do not recommend you purchase either of those models.

Thank you for helping us make sure your child receives the best possible math education with the latest tools available. If the purchase of this graphing calculator will place an undue financial burden on your family, please contact me or your child’s math teacher.

Sincerely,

Chris Carter

Principal
